Keeping your antivirus software up to date

remove conficker worm
It is hard to believe that some computer users today still do not understand the need for effective, up-to-date antivirus software. Yet, as recently as March 31, the entire computing world was alerted to a renewed danger from the Cornficker worm. Cornficker exploits a hole in the Windows ® operating system. Microsoft closed the hole in October of last year. The real problem is that many users never downloaded the fix, even though it was provided free by Microsoft.
The same situation holds true for other viruses, worms, Trojan horses and spyware. Many users acquire antivirus software for free when they purchase a new computer or when they subscribe to an internet service provider. Frequently, though, these packages are free only for a limited time. Many users then ignore the on-going danger and do not keep the software current. So even though a virus, like Cornficker, has been identified and isolated, it can still spread. As a result, a computer that was clean at one time can become infected and can continue to spread the virus. The message: Protect yourself and others. Make sure you keep your antivirus software up to date.
